Root to the Aburd

We, here, at Ultra Quiz Plus are huge fans of British Panel Shows. It is a very popular format on UK Radio and TV, but there are only a few examples made in the states. The format normally has a host or hosts that ask comedy set up questions to celebrities.

Unlike a normal quiz show where average people compete for prizes, the celebrities compete for points and air time by saying the funniest thing. Part improv, part quiz, part banter in various amounts depending on the format devise used to hold the show together.

In America, you may be familiar with NPR’s “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” which is a topical news quiz and very popular.

Our show takes a slightly more absurdist approach in the example of shows like Reeves and Mortimer’s “Shooting Stars” and Noel Fielding’s “The Mighty Boosh”. While “Boosh” is not a quiz, it’s reliance on the “surprise of the absurd” like “Shooting Stars” has one often wondering just what they are laughing at.

Our show draws from all those examples.

The questions may be topical or may be simple whimsy. Each are designed to be a joke in their own right, but also set up the local comics that make up the panel to improvise. If I I’m lucky, I write a question that is so surprising that the panelist breaks out laughing.

We record all of our shows in live environments, and with that there is some background noise, but we love the energy of doing the show in public places. We feature local comics who plug their shows and promote grassroots comedy.

If you are a comic thats going to be in Maine, let me know, we’ll have you on.
